Corpus Christi in Cusco
Corpus Christi (the body of Christ) is Cusco’s most important religious festival
A full two weeks of processions, religious events and festivals
A good opportunity for Alpakita to present a selection of photos taken on June 14th, 2008.
14 parishes carry their saints in a procession to the Cusco cathedral.
Here they will stay for 2 weeks.
On the main date, these 14 saints will enter into a procession from the cathedral around the main square.
It is said that when the Spanish conquerors witnessed the processions where the Incas carried their mummies,
they created the Corpus Christi festivities to give hold to the catholic religion.
One thing is for certain: in Cusco’s image,
Corpus Christ reflects an intermingled culture, a mix of two cultures.
Various dances accompany the procession.
In the Corpus Christi, through the various parishes, all of Cusco’s social classes are present.
The caretakers (or carguyoc in quechua) have the honour of taking charge of one of the festivities.
On the main day of celebrations the cusqueños eat a typical dish of "chiriuchu" (cold chilli in quechua).
It is prepared with a base of cuy (guinea pig), hen, dried meat, chorizo sausage, cheese, omelettes, (maize beer) and bread.
